If you’re looking to see “Dune: Part 3” on opening weekend in its full 70mm IMAX glory, you may already be out of luck. Although the film won’t be released until Dec. 17, tickets are already selling out.
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, “Dune 3” was shot partially with IMAX film cameras, a first for the blockbuster franchise inspired by a book that was written partially in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood. It stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, alongside other major actors like Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Rebecca Ferguson. The franchise has been a theatrical moneymaker for Warner Bros. Pictures, with the first installment earning $411 million worldwide, followed by a sequel that raked in $715 million. The first film earned six Academy Awards, while the second won two.
As with “The Odyssey,” the premier way to see “Dune 3” is via a 70mm IMAX print. However, only 25 theaters in the country are equipped to show the format. There are two in the Bay Area: AMC Metreon 16 in San Francisco and Regal Hacienda Crossings in Dublin. At the Metreon, 7 p.m. screenings for the first three nights are completely sold out; the other weekend screenings, including a special 2:30 a.m. showing, primarily have tickets in the front two rows remaining. Decent tickets do remain for a 7:30 a.m. screening in Dublin, but evening screenings there are already sold out. If you’re willing to settle for a regular IMAX screening, plenty of tickets still remain at the Apple Cinemas on Van Ness.
