BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A 67-year-old man accused of the hit-and-run death of a teen girl on Union Avenue was held to answer on all charges Thursday.
17 News live blogged the preliminary hearing of Jeff Don Ferguson in the courtroom of Judge William Schlaerth.
Police say Ferguson, who was arrested weeks later, admitted to initially stopping after hitting the teen on July 18 in the 3400 block of Union. He checked his vehicle for damage then walked back to the crash scene.
He then went back to his vehicle, drove to his home in Oildale and hid it, according to a court filing.
The teen, Love Icelyn Dixon, was taken to Kern Medical, where she was declared dead.
Flock cameras helped identify Ferguson’s vehicle and he was arrested Aug. 5. He has pleaded not guilty to hit-and-run causing death and misdemeanor counts of driving on a license suspended or revoked for DUI and driving while addicted to a drug.
According to the filing, Ferguson admitted to being a decades-long methamphetamine addict. He doesn’t have a valid driver’s license.
It’s not alleged he was under the influence of a drug at the time of the crash.
