The University of San Diego men’s soccer team started its season with a bang on Thursday night, taking down No. 1-ranked and defending national champion Washington 2-1 in Seattle.
Taj Eagleston and Devin Dillon scored for the Toreros, and goalkeeper Lucca Adams held on to the victory after Washington cut USD’s lead in half late in regulation.
Washington outshot USD 16-6, though the Toreros had nearly as many shots on goal (four) as the Huskies (five). Adams finished with four saves.
Eagleston got USD on the board in the 11th minute, firing a shot to the bottom-right corner of the net with his right foot. USD led 1-0 at the half, then quickly doubled it when Dillon fired a left-footed shot to the bottom-right corner in the 53rd minute. Washington’s Zach Ramsey hit the same spot in the 76th minute to cap scoring.
Coached by former U.S. National Team member and former San Diego Sockers star Brian Quinn, USD has won four consecutive West Coast Conference titles.
The Toreros (1-0) will open their home slate Sunday with a match against Liberty. The game starts at 5 p.m. from Torero Stadium.
