FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — A Fresno County Senior Deputy District Attorney was stabbed in Courthouse Park outside of the Fresno County Courthouse in downtown Fresno on Thursday.

It happened just after 1 p.m. near the Law Enforcement Memorial.

The male suspect ran from the scene but was captured a couple of blocks away at the intersection of Fresno Street and Van Ness Blvd. by Fresno County sheriff’s deputies.

Deputies say they had to use a Taser to take him into custody. A weapon was also taken from the man.

He was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

The male victim was taken to Community Regional Medical Center and was said to be awake, breathing, and conscious.

In a statement Fresno County District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp says:

“We are outraged and deeply saddened by the brazen stabbing of one of our Senior Deputy District Attorneys this afternoon in Courthouse Park.”

She went on to say:

There is no place in our community for violence against those who serve it.

The Sheriff’s Office and MAGEC are actively investigating this incident and working to determine the motive.

Out of respect for the man and his family, his identity will not be released.
