Sacramento considers bringing back red light cameras for 20 intersections. How you can weigh in
SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Sacramento is considering the possibility of reinstating red light cameras at 20 busy intersections, including in Natomas, Downtown, Arden-Arcade, and south Sacramento.
The city previously scrapped its red light camera program due to operating costs. That program was managed by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials now want to bring the cameras back under a new state law that reclassifies red light violations as traffic tickets instead of criminal moving violations.
They say the cameras would only capture rear license plates, not faces. The new program would be managed by the Department of Public Works and would not be connected to police databases.
Records would only be shared if there was a court order to do so, according to the city.
Fines would start at $100 for the first violation. Residents with low incomes could qualify for reductions and low payment plans.
The revenue raised would be reinvested in “Vision Zero” street safety improvements like raised crosswalks and curb extensions.
Residents are encouraged to weigh in on the proposal by completing a survey.
