SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A 33-year-old man was stabbed to death Friday morning inside a San Diego apartment, and his girlfriend is suspected in the killing, police said.
The stabbing happened shortly after 11:30 a.m. at an apartment on 39th Street near Polk Avenue, where witnesses reported hearing an argument between a man and a woman.
“I just heard arguing going on,” witness Raymond said. “Apparently somebody got stabbed in the chest.”
Several construction workers were on a nearby roof when they heard the commotion. Herman Resendiz said one of his co-workers, Jerry, looked down and then climbed into the apartment area after hearing a woman screaming for help.
“All I heard was somebody yelling inside, ‘Help me, Ayúdame, Ayúdame,'” Jerry said in a phone interview.
Jerry said he then saw the woman and the victim.
“She had stabbed him,” he said.
San Diego police officers and paramedics responded and attempted to save the man’s life. Acting Lt. Christopher Leahy said the victim was bleeding heavily and was found with a woman standing over him.
“He was bleeding profusely,” Leahy said. “The male was tended to by officers and later paramedics. Unfortunately, his death was pronounced here at the scene.”
A neighbor provided video showing the woman being taken away by paramedics. Witnesses said she appeared to have blood on her and was crying.
Leahy said the woman also reported being in pain and was taken to a hospital. Her injuries appeared to be minor, he said.
Police said the woman and the victim were in a romantic relationship and have a child who lives with them. The child was at school at the time of the stabbing.
Police confirmed later Friday that the woman was arrested and booked into the Las Colinas Detention Facility on one charge of murder.
San Diego police worked with San Diego Unified School District officials to take protective custody of the child and reunite her with relatives, Leahy said.
Investigators were working to determine what led to the confrontation and the fatal stabbing. Police said both the victim and the suspected attacker are 33 years old.
The victim has been identified by police, but his name is being withheld at this time pending family notification.
