Road Commission for Oakland County Seeking Workers with CDL-A Endorsement

Beverly Hills, MI — The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) continues efforts to hire full-time laborers to help maintain the roads across the county. The positions require a Michigan commercial driver’s license with an air-brake endorsement (CDL-A) to allow the employees to operate RCOC trucks when needed.

The starting wage is $21.59 per hour. These positions come with a full benefits package that includes health insurance, employer-funded dental and life insurance, paid holidays, vacation and personal leave, a tuition reimbursement program and a retirement plan for vested employees.

“Whether they are maintaining roads, responding to storms or helping keep traffic moving safely, these employees play a critical role in serving Oakland County residents,” RCOC Managing Director Dennis Kolar stated. “We are looking for dedicated, safety-focused individuals who take pride in hard work and making a difference in their community.”

In addition to a CDL-A license, qualified applicants must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent, be prepared to accept placement at any of the six RCOC garage locations in Oakland County (Milford Township, Springfield Township, Orion Township, Waterford Township, Southfield and Troy), acknowledge that the scope of work will align with seasonal road repair/maintenance and winter storm response and be willing to meet daily attendance requirements and work overtime.

Examples of some of the work the employees in this position perform include:      

Traffic control
Patching potholes
Cleaning up roadsides
Working with basin, tree-trimming and pavement repair crews
Salting and plowing the roads
Operating large vehicles (greater than 26,000 lb.)
Servicing and maintaining equipment
Operating various pieces of equipment such as chippers, chainsaws, tractor semis, etc.
Dependent on experience, may be asked to operate heavy-construction equipment such as shoulder maintainers, graders, loaders, excavators, vactors, etc.

All work is done collaboratively, safely and efficiently and must be performed in a citizen-oriented manner in accordance with all rules, regulations and policies. Typically, candidates with a diverse background, such as serving in the military; working in construction, cement or asphalt; landscaping; or general laboring are successful in this role (though other backgrounds will be considered as well).
