CPA football coach Ingle Martin said the second half of his team’s 56-7 home loss to Oakland was a blur. 

Everyone else in attendance might agree with him after Patriots junior running back Jacob Vaughn rushed for 191 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries in his first appearance after transferring from Riverdale in the offseason. 

Vaughn broke scoring runs of 50 and 90 yards against the Lions and was one of six different Patriots to score a touchdown. 

The 170-pound tailback re-introduced himself to the Midstate after netting 1,352 all-purpose yards and 10 TDs as a sophomore at Riverdale.

“The game plan was to get me on the outside run,” Vaughn said. “Coach (Kevin Creasy) knows I’m fast. You know I can outrun anybody, but I have to get credit to my (offensive line). I couldn’t do anything without my line.”

CPA (0-1) gave an early glimpse of what everyone, including Creasy, thought the game would be: a back-and-forth game with both teams needing to produce methodical drives to score. 

The Lions took a 7-0 lead on a 15-yard run by Nate Knox with 8:19 left in the first quarter but were outscored 56-0 the rest of the way. 

All eight of Oakland’s scoring drives came within eight plays, and arguably the Patriots’ biggest mistake of the night was missing an extra point on its first touchdown of the game. 

“We got so many different guys that can make plays,” Creasy said. “We got a quarterback (Kam Morton) that can manage the game really well, make plays with his arm, make plays with his feet, and he loves serving it up to different guys when he’s throwing it to them. We love handing it off to different guys as well.” 

Vaughn and Donte Cameron – who transitioned from splitting reps with Morton at quarterback to playing running back this offseason – rushed for two scores apiece. Ja’Vonni Malone, Morton, Kemani Bass and Ja’Mycah Williamson also found the end zone. Malone’s touchdown was a 24-yard reception from Morton in the second quarter. 

After scoring to start the game, only two of CPA’s eight offensive possessions lasted longer than six plays. Two of those drives resulted in fumbles that Oakland recovered and quickly turned into points. 

“We had some opportunities in the first half that I think changed the game,” Martin said. “And then it got away. Like, the second half is kind of a blur. So it got away quickly.” 

Martin’s first game of his 16th season as the Lions’ head coach ended with the worst loss of his tenure, the previous worst being a 45-0 defeat to Knoxville Catholic in 2016. 

Oakland (1-0), which has won five of the last six Class 6A state titles, continued a dominant stretch against opponents from the state of Tennessee. The Patriots have won 21 straight games against in-state competition dating back to a 32-31 overtime loss to Ravenwood in October 2025. 

“We worked our tail off for this. We knew it was gonna be tough on the road,” Creasy said. “You know, it’s always tough to come over here and play. Last time we were here, we lost pretty bad. So we wanted to kind of right that wrong.”
