El Moro, an iconic churrería established in 1935 in Mexico City, will open its third Southern California location at 1327 W. Whittier Blvd., inside La Habra Towne Center, on September 10. This new location aims to bring the tradition of freshly made churros and rich hot chocolate to North Orange County.
The menu will feature made-to-order churros available individually or in sets of four or twelve, along with traditional *roscas* and bite-sized *moritos*. Guests can choose from various dipping sauces, including chocolate, cajeta, condensed milk, and chocolate hazelnut. The signature *consuelo*, an ice cream sandwich made with churros, will also be available.
El Moro’s chocolate offerings are crafted from cacao sourced from Tabasco, Mexico, and include several varieties: “Mexicano” (with cinnamon), “Francés” (creamy with vanilla), “Especial” (bittersweet), and “Oaxaqueño” (dairy-free). Unique to the U.S. locations is the “champurrado,” a traditional masa-and-chocolate preparation.
In addition to churros and chocolate, the drinks menu features café de olla, americanos, cappuccinos, and iced Mexican lattes in flavors like horchata and churro.
Santiago Iriarte, co-owner and grandson of founder Francisco Iriarte, expressed excitement about the new location, stating, “La Habra felt like a very natural place for us. There is such a strong connection to Mexico and its food culture here.”
El Moro began serving churros in Mexico City’s Centro Histórico and continues to uphold its family-owned legacy, maintaining recipes and traditions over the decades.
