BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who was struck and killed by a vehicle on Wible Road as 36-year-old Matthew David Harper of Bakersfield.
The Bakersfield Police Department said on Wednesday, August 19th, 2026, at 9:20 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of Wible Road with a report of a crash between a vehicle and a pedestrian.
When officers arrived, they found Harper down in the roadway suffering from “fatal injuries.”
The coroner’s report said Harper was taken to Kern Medical where he later died from his injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as a woman, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Police said the investigation found that Harper was crossing outside of a crosswalk on Wible Road south of Ming Avenue when he was struck by the southbound vehicle.
According to police, the driver showed no signs of impairment, and speed did not appear to be a factor in the crash.
