When Mission Bay High reopened for classes on Monday, Aug. 10, students were met with Phase 1 of the school’s whole site renovation and modernization.
Mission Bay High School Principal Dr. Eric Brown estimates the entire campus renovation and modernization will be completed by 2030.
“Mission Bay originally opened in September 1953. It was part of a broader expansion of educational facilities in the area during the post-World War II population boom. It has undergone improvements and additions throughout the years. But now, much of the campus is being renovated and upgraded,” Brown said.
Last spring, temporary classroom buildings were brought in and placed near the tennis courts on the west side of the campus. These buildings will serve as space for the classrooms that have been closed while the campus renovation continues.
The overall footprint of the school will not change during the modernization over the next four years. But classroom spaces will be upgraded and modernized with new flooring, wiring, lighting, painting, and window treatments.
The renovation will also include a complete makeover of the auditorium to include new seating, ADA accessibility, dressing rooms, a ticket booth, and new sound and lighting systems for the stage.

Phase 1 includes:
Moving four teachers from their classrooms into temporary rooms near the tennis courts.
Renovating and remodeling those same four classrooms into temporary main office workspaces. The main office, including the principal, associate principals, secretaries, counselors, attendance and health offices, will move into these four classrooms in the winter. Then the major remodel of the front office and upgrades to the front of the school along Grand Avenue will begin.
On the east side of the campus, the older natural grass multi-purpose field has been removed in preparation for installing a new synthetic grass multi-purpose field. The finished field will be marked for football, soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse.
The girls’ locker room is being remodeled to include new showers, restroom facilities, new changing areas, lockers, team rooms and painting. Currently, the girls’ PE changing room is in a larger temporary building near the tennis courts.
