Two first-half goals from junior midfielder Miah Thomas led Cal Poly Women’s Soccer to a 3-0 victory over San Jose State on Sunday at Spanos Stadium.
The Mustangs honored graduating seniors Bailey Bracha, Shelby Runje, Annika Smith and Siena Urzua, alongside fifth-year players Sophia Minnite and Alyssa Szarlacki.
Cal Poly opened the scoring in the 27th minute when freshman Madison Lujan drove into the box and took a shot that was saved before Thomas put away the rebound. Just over three minutes later, Thomas doubled the advantage by heading home a cross from Kenzie Herzing off a sequence that began with a throw-in from Kammy MacLennan. Lujan, Herzing and MacLennan each recorded their first collegiate points on the assists.
The Mustangs added their third goal four minutes into the second half when Sam Liaty hit a shot off the bottom of the crossbar following an assist from Smith. Liaty’s goal was her first as a Mustang, while Smith registered her eighth career assist in her 34th consecutive start.
Cal Poly secured its second shutout of the season, holding the Spartans without a shot on goal until the 78th minute. Junior goalkeeper Shannon Porubski played the first half, and Szarlacki finished the match in net with five saves.
Freshmen Delaney Franklin, Suna Roberts and Nina Souto made their collegiate debuts in the match, while sophomores Maddy Cole and Zoe Minnery made their first appearances for Cal Poly. The Mustangs finished with a 19-8 shot advantage, including an 11-5 edge in shots on goal, and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
