After more than 30 years of planning, the Titan statue has been completed in Cal State Fullerton’s O’Brien Square, located between the Humanities and Social Sciences Building and Gordon Hall.
This $1.7 million statue was originally planned to be built in the mid-1990s but was repeatedly delayed due to lack of proper funding, until the CSUF Alumni Association donated $120,000. Extra funding from the CSUF Philanthropic Foundation Board of Governors and Associated Students totaled donations to $600,000 in 2022.
In a recent Instagram post from the official CSUF page, the finished look of the Titan statue was revealed, stating in the caption, “Experience the newest symbol of Titans past, present, and future!”
The statue stands at 22 feet from the tip of its trunk to its foot and weighs over 18,000 pounds, according to its artist, Matthew Gray Palmer.
In an email to the Daily Titan in January of this year, Palmer described the original idea of the statue as a highly collaborative process, involving student, administrative and committee feedback.
“Composition models were reviewed and voted on by students and faculty, and over time, the final pose was carefully refined to reflect the collective feedback and vision,” said Palmer.
An official dedication ceremony will be held later this year to celebrate its addition to the campus.
