The kids are back at school; now the college students return to class
Kids across the Eastside have been returning to school in waves this month, and now it’s time for the college students to get back to class. Cal State L.A. students returned to school for the Fall 2026 semester on Monday. For Occidental College students, it’s today. East L.A. College and Los Angeles City College students officially begin the Fall 2026 semester on August 31.
Cal State L.A. fundraising record
El Sereno—Cal State L.A. raised a record $55.8 million in philanthropic commitments during fiscal year 2026, the university announced Monday. The total was driven by a $48 million Ballmer Group grant to prepare more than 1,000 new youth mental health counselors and social workers. The university’s Annual Fund also raised about $50,000 on Giving Tuesday, another record.
LAUSD to hold public hearing for schools seeking charter renewals
The LAUSD Board of Education will conduct public hearings today for more than 40 charter schools – including four that are located on the Eastside – that are seeking to renew their charters until 2032. The four Eastside schools are:

Cal State L.A. faculty member, two students are part of Emmy-winning team
A Cal State L.A. faculty member and two of her students are part of a team recognized recently with an Emmy award for the 66th Annual Los Angeles County Holiday Celebration broadcast on PBS SoCal, the university announced in a news release.
Meredith Greenburg, chair of the university’s Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of Arts and Letters, served as lead stage manager for the production, which takes place at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion each December. Students Leah Cobleigh and Ngan Ho-Lemoine served as Greenburg’s assistant stage managers. Both students are theatre design and production majors. As assistant stage managers, the two students gained experience in a major live television and performing arts production.
Greenburg and her students, along with the rest of the PBS SoCal team, won the Emmy in the Live Special Events – Programming category at the 78th Los Angeles Emmy Awards held in late July.
