One person is dead after San Diego police opened fire in Point Loma after conducting a welfare check on Tuesday night, according to the San Diego Police Department.
Around 3:30 p.m., San Diego police officers responded to a call for a welfare check on a person holding a knife in the backyard of a Point Loma home located at 2700 Nipoma St., SDPD Officer John Buttle told NBC San Diego.
At some point during Tuesday’s incident, SWAT was called in and San Diego police fatally shot the person, Buttle said.
It is not yet clear what events led to the shooting. No officers were injured during the event, police said.
No other details were immediately available.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department will be taking over the investigation. San Diego County law enforcement agencies have a memorandum of understanding that prevents departments from investigating shootings involving their own officers.
