SAN JOSE, Calif. – Police in San Jose say an armed-robbery suspect, who was spotted in a vehicle on Tuesday, was shot and killed by police. The San Jose Police Department said the suspect shot at two officers and injured one of them.
At a late-night news conference, police said the officer who was shot had stabilized after being listed in critical condition. The suspect, who has not been identified, died at the scene, according to police.
What we know:
Police said the shooting happened at Lick Avenue and Goodyear Avenue at around 6 p.m. The police initially responded to the area after receiving a call at around 12:30 p.m.
SJPD spokesperson Stacie Shih spoke to reporters shortly before midnight. She said the officers spotted the suspect vehicle, an SUV, and when officers tried to conduct a stop of the vehicle, the suspect brandished a firearm at the officers and fled the scene.
“The vehicle was later abandoned in the area of Lick Street and Goodyear Avenue,” Shih said.
Shih said officers saw the suspect enter a nearby residence. The home was occupied by a family with at least one juvenile.
The suspect, who police said was hiding inside the home, allegedly shot at two officers, one of which was struck at least once. Shih, indicated the injured officer was a male.
The suspect was also shot once and died at the scene, police said.
SJPD said there is no known threat to the community at this time and that the investigation is active and ongoing.
A press conference with more information is forthcoming.
Mayor visits officer
Mayor Matt Mahan’s office said he visited the injured officer this evening. They did not provide any further details. The officer was taken to Valley Medical.
A source told KTVU a second person, who may have been with the man who was killed, was also taken to the hospital. Their condition is not known.
Aerial footage from SkyFOX showed several San Jose police officers in the area.
San Jose officer hurt in ‘incident’, mayor says
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan says an officer has been hurt in an incident. It is not clear how the officer was injured. The mayor said he was headed to the hospital to check on the officer. The incident happened in the area of Goodyear Street and Lick Avenue.
Chase involving undercover officers
A half hour after the shooting, at around 6:30 p.m., at Locust and Willow streets, about two blocks from the shooting, we were told there was a police chase involving undercover police officers and another driver. That led to a crash of a black minivan, but it’s unclear which vehicle crashed into the minivan. It is also unclear if the crash is related to the shooting.
