To most students, the library is simply the place to lock-in on a daunting assignment or loan a book for a required class reading. Going to the library is a daily routine for many of us, yet students rarely experience the full potential of its offerings.
I know — the library is not the first place you think of going to when your to-do list is finally completed. However, there are many perks the UC Berkeley libraries offer that may actually make a trip to Main Stacks something to look forward to. I have made a list of a few of my favorites that you should take advantage of this upcoming school year.
Graphic Arts Loans Collection
If you want to upscale your dorm or apartment with one-of-a-kind artwork, the Graphic Arts Loans Collection has made this possible without spending a dime. The GALC offers a collection of framed artwork for loan through Morrison Library. It’s not every day that college students get to live with original lithographs, but the GALC makes that possible. Just agree to the borrowing agreement and go to Morrison Library, and you can walk out with some new decor for your room. But don’t wait to claim that piece of art you’ve been eyeing — prints are first come, first served.
Lunch Poems
Morrison Library stands out again, offering Lunch Poems from 12:10 p.m. to 12:50 p.m. on certain dates. Whether you love poetry or just need a place to unwind between classes, Lunch Poems offers a unique experience of listening to poets read their work. Come meet poetry enthusiasts and award-winning authors next time you find yourself free at noon, and maybe you’ll discover your new favorite poem. Event details are posted on the UC Berkeley Library website.
Moffitt Maker Studio
The reopened Moffitt Library has welcomed a new space packed with all the tools and materials needed for you to bring your creative ideas to life. You’ll find button-makers, embroidery tools, sewing machines, knitting needles, crochet hooks and even power tools. If you want to personalize your water bottle or customize your wardrobe, look into the vinyl cutting tools — including adhesive vinyl for decals and stickers and heat-transfer vinyl for shirts and tote bags. The full array of offerings can be found on the UC Berkeley Library website. And if you’ve never heard of or used any of these tools, don’t worry. If you can imagine it, you can make it — the Moffitt Maker Studio also provides tutorials on their website and in-studio workshops.
Berkeley Risk and Security Lab board game collection
Looking for a new, fun way to spend a night in with your friends? You probably don’t think to turn to the library, but the Social Research Library and the Thomas J. Long Business Library might have exactly what could kindle a night of bonding. These libraries both offer a range of unique board games that can be loaned for a week. Whether you and your friends are looking to strategically accomplish a mission together, or the vibe is more of a heated “every person for themselves” competition — the game collection definitely has something for your group. The library is a special place of endless bookshelves and extensive lock-in sessions. I hope this guide shows you there is more beyond the books — and your favorite campus perk may be found in the same place as your dreaded study session.
