A $640 million project is coming to the Port of Oakland with the goal of accommodating larger ships and improving cargo efficiency.
Port officials and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced plans Thursday to transform the port’s turning basins by widening parts of the harbor.
City leaders joined port and federal officials for the signing of a design agreement marking the start of the modernization effort.
The Port of Oakland said the improvements will allow some of the world’s largest and most environmentally advanced vessels to safely and more efficiently maneuver through the port’s waterways.
Oakland’s mayor said the project will also help sustain the city’s position as a “green innovation hub” as the port transitions toward zero-emissions operations.
