Labor Day weekend usually means one last trip to the beach or a backyard barbecue. But an hour south of L.A., an entire town square turns into something closer to a world’s fair — minus the passport, the flight, or the entry fee. The Orange International Street Fair returns September 4–6, and it’s been doing this every year since 1973.
A fair that’s been running for over 50 years
The fair centers on Plaza Park, the historic traffic circle at the heart of Old Towne Orange, with the footprint stretching along Chapman Avenue and Glassell Street. Both close to cars for the entire weekend. What started as a City of Orange centennial celebration has grown into the city’s single biggest event of the year, pulling in roughly 300,000 visitors over three days — a crowd bigger than the population of Orange itself!
The format hasn’t changed much in five decades. Each corner of the fair takes on a different country’s identity: turn one direction and you’re in a stretch of Ireland, turn another and you’re suddenly in Greece. Wander the food streets and you’ll find Australian dagwood dogs and Tim Tams, Lebanese shawarma and baklawa, French crêpes, Swiss sausage, Greek gyros and loukoumades, German bratwurst, Italian cannoli and pasta, and Mexican tacos, churros, and horchata.
Beyond the food
Music never really stops here. Across 8 stages — Main, American, Irish, Mexican, Greek, German, Polynesian, and a dedicated Youth Stage — the lineup rotates through mariachi, rock bands, Greek folk performances, hula dancers, and local school ensembles from morning until close. It’s the kind of setup where you can plant yourself at one stage for an hour, wander off for food, and stumble into a completely different genre two blocks later. Beyond the eating and the live sets, the fair also runs a full lineup of arts and crafts vendors!
