ARGYLE, Wis. — A California man is dead after a rollover crash in Argyle on Thursday evening, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred on 6484 State Highway 81 at 6:17 p.m. Lafayette County Sheriff’s Deputies, Argyle Fire, Argyle EMS and Lafayette County EMS were immediately dispatched to the crash scene.

The crash investigation revealed a 1957 Chevy Bel Air automobile, driven by Daniel L Smith (79), of El Cajon, California was traveling westbound on State Highway 81. Smith’s vehicle traveled off the road into the northside ditch, where it then traveled back across the roadway into the southside ditch, causing the vehicle to roll, and coming to rest on its roof.

The vehicle sustained severe damage. Smith was declared deceased on scene by the Lafayette County Coroner’s Office. An 85-year-old female passenger in the vehicle was treated for minor injuries and released. The sheriff’s office said speed and failure to maintain control appear to have been factors in the crash. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

The sheriff’s office was assisted on scene by Argyle Fire and EMS, Lafayette EMS, and the Lafayette County Coroner’s Office.
