A dog was shot after biting a Los Angeles Police Department officer during a response Thursday to a domestic violence call at a South Los Angeles residence.
Officers responded to the home at about 9 a.m. They were standing in the street after handling the domestic violence report when they were approached by about three unrestrained dogs, Capt. Mike Bland said.
One of the dogs bit an officer in the “lower extremities,” and the officer opened fire, Bland said. The owner eventually came outside to restrain the dogs.
The LAPD said the officer was hospitalized in stable condition.
The dog who was shot was transported by Los Angeles Animal Services for treatment of its injuries.
A use of force investigation into the shooting will be conducted.
In June, a dog was shot and killed after LAPD officers responded to a disturbance call at a Canoga Park apartment that turned out to be a woman celebrating the New York Knicks NBA championship.
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell vowed that a full investigation into that shooting. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said she would seek a reevaluation of the LAPD’s policies on the use of force and pets following the release of body-worn camera footage of the fatal shooting.
