BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Friday, August 28 marks the second week of high school football in Kern County.

Bakersfield Police Chief Brent Stratton spoke out in a social media video for the public about their partnership with the Kern High School District to ensure safety and enforce new safety measures at football games.

The video follows a week after a deadly shooting at Independence High School during the football game against Centennial High School.

“We spent this week at the Bakersfield Police Department working with the Kern High School District to ensure that we have a safe environment for our families, for our students, and our student athletes,” said Bakersfield Police Chief Brent Stratton in a social media video.

Chief Stratton said that football game attendees can expect to see an increased presence of BPD and Kern High Police, as well as enhanced safety protocols.

Kern High School District announced new safety measures at games early this week.

All high school students must have a valid school-issued IDStudents not enrolled in high school must be accompanied and supervised by an adultWeapons or objects used as weapons are prohibitedNo backpacks allowed inside the venueAll bags subject to search; clear bags recommendedArrive early; expect delays due to security measuresDress codes will be enforced and no face coverings allowedSpectators must remain in designated seating and other identified areasCIF behavioral guidelines and event expectations will be strictly enforcedAnyone who does not follow event expectations may be removed and restricted from future events

“We want to encourage you, if you see something, please report it, please say something, let security know, let a high school police officer know, let a Bakersfield police officer know,” said Chief Stratton. “We need that partnership with our community to help keep our community and our schools safe.”
