45th Roundabout Opens in Oakland County

Commerce Township, Milford, MI – The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), in partnership with Commerce Township and Milford Township, today, Thursday, Aug. 27, opened its 45th roundabout at the Wixom Road/Wixom Trail/Sleet Road/Duck Lake Road intersection on the border of both townships.
The new roundabout is part of RCOC’s ongoing commitment to improving safety and traffic flow through Oakland County. RCOC has the largest concentration of roundabouts of any county in Michigan.
“Roundabouts are one of the most effective tools we have for reducing the severity of crashes and improving safety at busy intersections,” RCOC Managing Director Dennis Kolar said. “This project replaces two signalized intersections with one modern roundabout, creating a safer, more efficient intersection for approximately 12,000 motorists who travel through the area each day. We appreciate the cooperation of Commerce Township and Milford Township, as well as the patience of motorists and residents during construction.”
The $2.2 million project was funded by RCOC. In addition to converting the two signalized intersections into a single, modern roundabout, the project included:
Reconstruction of approximately 0.4 miles of road with asphalt paving and new curbs and gutters.
Installation of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant pedestrian crosswalk on the east leg of the roundabout.
Installation of intersection lighting.
The contractor for the project was Angelo Iafrate Construction of Warren.
Residents and motorists in the area are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new traffic pattern. Drivers are reminded to:
Yield to traffic already in the roundabout.
Watch for pedestrians and cyclists.
Never stop within the roundabout.
If an emergency vehicle is approaching, exit the roundabout before pulling over; do not stop inside the roundabout.
