(FOX40.COM) — The Sacramento Police Department will check drivers for impairment Friday evening, the city said.
According to the city, officers will be out from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at a location that has experienced previous “impaired driving-related crashes.”
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sergeant Anna Mahoney said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
The city noted that alcohol is not the only substance that can cause a driver to be impaired. Some prescription and over-the-counter medications can also affect a person’s ability to drive as well as marijuana.
Drivers convicted of a DUI for the first time face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, the city said.
