Former Fresno State football player Nate Maier died Tuesday.
He was 21.
The cause of death or where he died was not immediately known.
Maier joined the Bulldogs football program after playing at Rim of the World High School in Lake Arrowhead. In 2021, he helped the team finish with an 8-2 overall record and a 4-0 league record.
“Nate’s passing has left his family, friends and our community heartbroken,” according to a GoFundMe post by Michelle Black of Rim Athletic Association. “During a time when his mother, sister and brother-in-law should be able to focus on grieving, remembering Nate and supporting one another, we hope to help ease some of the financial burdens that can come with such an unexpected loss.”
That season, Maier recorded 38 tackles, including 26 solo tackles, an average of 4.8 tackles per game, and one interception.
He attended Fresno State practices before informing the program, then led by coach Jeff Tedford, that he was taking a leave of absence.
Maier was rated a three-star recruit by 247Sports.
“No family is ever prepared for a loss like this,” Black wrote. “If we can help lighten even one burden for Nate’s mother, sister and brother-in-law, we hope it will allow them a little more space to simply be together and grieve.”
Donations can be made through the GoFundMe campaign.
