It wasn’t pretty for the Fresno City College football team, but they found a way to pull out a tough win against Sierra.
Christian English scored a touchdown with 8 seconds remaining on a quarterback sneak, giving the Rams a 22-18 victory over the Wolverines in a nonconference game in Rocklin on Saturday.
It also gave Josh Brown his first win as the Rams’ head coach, making him the eighth coach to win in his debut, according to former Sports Information Director Woody Wilk.
Wilk said the eight previous head coaches collected a 7-0-1 record in their debuts, either at home or away. The only tie was posted in the late Clare Slaughter’s debut in 1959, when the Rams and Fullerton College ended in 6-6 tie at Ratcliffe Stadium.
Slaughter would go on to guide the Rams to four state championships.
The previous state championships were won in 1968, 1969 and 1972.
The Rams faced a 4th and 7 from their own 47-yard line. English threw a deep pass to Ray Brown, who leaped up and caught the ball, putting the Rams in position for a possible game-winning field goal.
Instead, Fresno City worked the ball down near the end zone until English scored.
