Oh, so close for the Edison High football team.
The Tigers were 4 minutes, 10 seconds away from pulling off an upset of The Bee’s No. 19-ranked Clovis North at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Thursday.
But the Broncos had other plans.
Cooper Haydock blocked a punt and recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown, cutting Edison’s lead to 19-14. After the Broncos recovered a fumble, Clovis North’s J.R. Cruz scored on an 18-yard touchdown run with 4:03 remaining to give the Broncos a 20-19 lead.
Edison drove to the Clovis North 20-yard line, but Adam Pacheco intercepted Asante Adams’ desperation pass in the end zone with 1:20 remaining, sealing the Broncos’ 22-19 victory.
“It was a hard-fought game,” Clovis North coach Colby Hunter said. “We didn’t play how we wanted to in the first half. We came out in the second half and made adjustments and ended up playing the ball we wanted to play. You get into that situation and let a young guy face adversity, it was really a good thing for them to see, but we don’t want to see that all the time.”
The Tigers led 19-7 after Corey Thomas returned an interception 61 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
A few minutes later, Edison attempted to punt from near its own end zone, but Haydock blocked the kick and recovered it for a touchdown.
The Tigers showed poise throughout the game, but Edison coach Johnny Sears Jr. said the loss provided a valuable lesson for his team.
“Being a small team, we just gotta be tougher,” Sears said. “And that’s what we’re working on. We’ll be better.”
Sears added that his team can benefit from the loss.
“There’s a lot of stuff that we can fix,” he said. “It’s nothing hard. Just back to the drawing board, watching the film, correcting it and getting ready for next week.”
No. 3 Buchanan 55, Central Valley Christian 21
Tommy Devany threw four touchdown passes to lead the Bears to the win.
Buchanan running back Gannon Sever ran for two scores, while Carvell Wafer Jr. caught three touchdown passes.
The victory was Buchanan’s first of the season after the Bears had to forfeit last week’s 63-27 win over Golden West for using an ineligible player.
But against the Cavaliers, it was all Bears. Sever put the game away with a 57-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that gave Buchanan a 34-14 lead.
No. 18 Kennedy 36, No. 6 Tulare Union 35 (OT)
Jorge Avila scored on a 2-yard run in overtime, and then scored the 2-point conversion to lift the Thunderbirds past the Tribe..
Kennedy rushed for 428 yards, led by Isaiah Feathers’ 157 yards in 19 carries. Jordan Palomorushed for 108 and Avila 105.
Tribe quarterback Kylan Henderson threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns. Demaje Riley caught six passes for 151 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for another.
The Thunderbirds gained 484 yards, and the Tribe 365.
The Tribe scored a touchdown in overtime for a 35-28 lead.
But the Thunderbirds answered with a touchdown and converted on a two-point conversion.
