The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office announced the death of an inmate Friday at the Sacramento County Main Jail.
On Aug. 18, the inmate had been transported to a local hospital for higher-level care, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. The hospital staff pronounced him dead on Friday, sheriff’s officials said.
While hospitalized, the inmate was placed on hospice care because he had a valid do not resuscitate order on file. The inmate had been in custody since Sept. 8, 2023, on murder charges.
The Sheriff’s Office will complete an investigation into the inmate’s death, and the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will determine an official cause of death. The coroner will also release the inmate’s name, according to the news release.
This death marks the fifth of 2026 and 47th since 2021 at a Sacramento County jail facility, according to previous Sacramento Bee reporting.
