BERKELEY, Calif. – Central Michigan Field Hockey fell 2-4 at California Berkeley in the second game of the Chippewas opening weekend three-game set in California.
Senior forward Annabelle Cotroneo led the Chippewas’ offensive push on the day, recording an assist as the inserter on fellow senior Hailey Bainer’s opening goal, bringing the score to 1-2. The successful corner attempt was Bainer’s fourth career goal in Maroon and Gold.
Cotroneo made her second mark on the score sheet just over 20 seconds into the second half. A broken play by the Golden Bears was capitalized on by Bri Eckenroth, who helped the Chippewas claim possession and drive the ball in low. Cotroneo came up with the loose ball in the chaos and found the back of the cage on a flick to tie the game at two.
The tie held until early into the fourth quarter, when Cal found their third goal of the game just under a minute into the frame. The Golden Bears then added the final goal of the game with about nine minutes remaining.
Starting in her second straight game, Jenna Billig was peppered with 12 shots on goal and recorded eight saves. Additionally, she faced six Golden Bears’ corner attempts.
“There was a lot of good hockey from our group today.” Chippewa Head Coach Kelly Terwilliger said, “We need to manage big moments with more composure and better decision-making, and those are experiences you have to go through together. I like what we’re building and the growth we’re seeing. We get another opportunity tomorrow, and we’re excited to go compete again.”
As a team, the Chippewas recorded seven shots, five landing on target, and were awarded five corner attempts.
Central Michigan will round out their California trip by heading across the San Francisco Bay for a date with Stanford beginning at 3 p.m. ET, Noon PT.
