Project replaces 1930s-era line with 54-inch resilient pipe to improve water system reliability.

Los Angeles has completed installation of more than 4 miles of earthquake-resistant pipe on the Foothill Trunk Line, a major upgrade to the city’s water distribution system, officials announced Thursday.

The project replaces a 1930s-era pipeline that ranged from 24 to 36 inches in diameter with a new 54-inch line made of welded steel and Earthquake Resistant Ductile Iron Pipe. The flexible joints are designed to better withstand ground movement during earthquakes.

City leaders and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power described the work as the largest and longest large-diameter earthquake-resistant ductile iron pipe installation in the United States. Since 2012, LADWP has installed 67.2 miles of earthquake-resilient pipe across the city.

The Foothill Trunk Line carries large volumes of water from reservoirs to smaller distribution lines serving local neighborhoods. Officials said the upgrade aims to improve reliability and reduce the risk of major failures during a seismic event.
