Oakland police arrested a shooting suspect they say set a home on fire after a lengthy shelter-in-place order Sunday.
The Oakland Police Department said it received multiple 911 calls Sunday morning about a man threatening to kill a woman in Manzanita Park, adding that when officers arrived on scene, the man began shooting at them. The officers rescued the woman and shot back at the suspect, but he fled the scene, police said.
The man was believed to be navigating through residential backyards near the scene, within a police perimeter, police said Sunday around 2 p.m. Residents in the area of 22nd Avenue and East 28th Street were advised to shelter in place.
Officers found the suspect in an abandoned home on the 2600 block of 22nd Avenue shortly before 3 p.m.,
the police department said. The suspect began to light items on fire before throwing them at officers and setting the home ablaze, the police department said.
Officers then deployed smoke in an effort to force the suspect out of the structure before he exited and was arrested, police said. The Oakland Fire Department extinguished the blaze.
The suspect suffered minor injuries, and no officers or neighbors were hurt, according to the police department.
