BARRON COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) – On Aug. 26 around 1:15 p.m., the Cumberland Police Department responded to a report of an armed robbery that occurred around Washington Street and 1st Avenue.
According to a press release on the department’s Facebook page, the victim reported he had arranged to meet an individual known to him in this area. During the meeting, the suspect, later identified as 20-year-old Oakland Barker, pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded his money. Barker reportedly took $300 in cash before leaving the area in a vehicle with two other people.
Officers used the Police Department’s Flock license plate reader system, which captured the vehicle traveling through Cumberland around the time of the robbery.
Barker was taken into custody in Eau Claire County around two hours after the reported robbery.
The case is still being investigated but charges have been referred to the Barron County District Attorney’s Office. The two other accomplices’ identities are known.
The investigation remains ongoing and additional charges or referrals may be made as the investigation continues.
Some community members in Western Wisconsin oppose the Flock cameras. Just in Eau Claire on Sunday, Aug. 30 at a Flock protest, an organizer said the cameras are a threat to privacy.
