I’ve fallen down this rabbit hole of the man who scammed women out of over a million dollars pretending to be a wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers.
According to the New York Times, a 35-year-old man, Daejon Love, was arrested after his scheme fell apart. I hope those affected somehow get their money back. The videos I’ve seen of Love on TikTok show him talking directly to the camera. He’d send prerecorded audio messages, not voice messages where you talk directly into the phone and hit send. He also shared the same 5-10 pictures and videos of him riding around in a vehicle with 49ers gear on.
Every time a video shows up on my For You Page, it’s a different clip (same angle) of him talking about loyalty, trust, how much money he had — a true chatterbox. He was supposedly an undrafted wide receiver who got many offers from teams. In one clip, which I cannot believe is real, he asks a woman how much she has in savings, how much she makes each month, her monthly bills, spending, debt, and more.
In text messages, he’d offer to take the women to Dave & Buster’s because he didn’t have much time. Training and other stuff had him too tired to do anything else (so laughable).
His supposedly star NFL best friends, new cars, and constant team switching?
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone so dedicated to living a fake life. Love said his best friends include Tyreke Hill, Antonio Brown, and John Brown. He would pull up to his barber’s shop in a Lamborghini and ride around in a McLaren but never showed the car. One minute he’s happy to be a 49ers, the next he’s talking about signing with the Raiders, then suddenly he’s on the Rams.
No college highlights
His Instagram was removed before I could see what was on there, but Love often posted workout footage. When one woman he talked to asked where his college highlights were or why he wasn’t playing in a game, he said he didn’t get much tape in college and that one of his fingers was injured so he couldn’t be on the field.
How to avoid this
Do not send money to people you don’t really know. No one should ask you to take out a loan and give them thousands, especially if they’re a millionaire NFL player. You can also check a team’s roster on their official website. As a football fan, it’s easy to see who’s actively on the roster, who’s on the practice squad, injured reserved, released, or waived.
