Authorities on Monday identified 44-year-old Aleem Spencer as the man arrested after allegedly firing multiple shots at police officers and throwing burning items at them before setting an East Oakland home on fire.
Spencer was eventually arrested after officers responded to 911 calls on Sunday at about 10:30 a.m. about a man threatening to harm a woman near 22nd Avenue and East 28th Street, close to Manzanita Park, Oakland police said Monday.
When officers arrived, Spencer allegedly began to shoot at the officers, police said. The officers rescued the woman and fired back at Spencer, who fled through the backyards of nearby homes, Oakland police said.
Police advised residents in the area to shelter in place.
Officers finally found Spencer hiding out in an abandoned home on the 2600 block of 22nd Avenue shortly before 3 p.m., police said. He then began to light items on fire before throwing them at officers and then setting the house on fire, police said.
Officers tried to drive Spencer out of the home with smoke and eventually he exited the house and was arrested. Oakland fire crews put out the fire.
Spencer suffered minor injuries, and no officers or neighbors were hurt, police said.
The incident remains under investigation. As of Monday, Alameda County prosecutors had not filed charges against Spencer.
