Authorities in California say a homicide investigation into a newborn found dead along a rural roadside now centers on a 14-year-old girl and a 38-year-old man believed to be hiding her. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office announced arrest warrants for the teen and for Sergio Galvez Perez, wanted on suspicion of incest, multiple child sex crimes, child concealment, and child endangerment. Investigators say the girl gave birth near Struve Road north of Moss Landing, placed the baby—dubbed “Baby Angelita” by officials—on the ground, and left. The baby’s body was found on Aug. 1. SFGate calls the developments “extraordinary,” considering authorities revealed Monday that Perez is the biological father of both the teen girl and the newborn.
The girl was just 13 when her father allegedly impregnated her, the Pajaronian reports. Nonetheless, she is wanted on suspicion of murder, ABC 7 reports. A forensic exam found traumatic injuries to the baby, though a precise cause of death hasn’t been released. A 36-year-old woman has also been arrested on suspicion of child endangerment, though she’s since been released on bail, and her relationship to Perez, the teen, or the newborn is not clear. Detectives used automated license plate readers to track a car linked to the case and identify suspects; Perez and the teen remain at large.
