WASHINGTON (TNND) — Lawmakers in California sent legislation that would ban shock gloves used by law enforcement to Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk this week.
The legislation won’t allow state funds to be used to purchase shock gloves for law enforcement agencies.
A Democratic lawmaker from San Diego argued Monday that “public safety technology must be proven safe and accountable before it is deployed, not after someone is killed or seriously injured.”
Mark Gonzalez, a Democratic lawmaker from Los Angeles said that minority communities would be test subjects if shock gloves were allowed to be used by law enforcement.
“We know that our immigrant communities, people who are Black or brown, will be the test subject for these gloves of torment,” he said, according to the Politico news outlet. “We will be that study.”
Newsom has until Sep. 30 to veto or approve the legislation.
Some local law enforcement agencies are against the legislation because some have already purchased the shock gloves.
