Ron Hamamoto, Tom Tarantino and Monique Lamphiere-Tamayoshi headline next month’s 10-person Hall of Fame induction class of the San Diego High School Coaching Legends.
Hamamoto coached varsity football for 39 years at USDHS (now Cathedral Catholic), Rancho Bernardo, Lincoln and Monte Vista, finishing with a 246-194-1 record. He is in his first year as Francis Parker’s defensive coordinator.
Tarantino coached varsity boys basketball for 35 years, starting in New York, then coaching locally at Carlsbad, Bishop’s, Army-Navy Academy and El Camino, compiling a 630-330 record.
Lamphiere-Tamayoshi coached gymnastics for 37 years at Mt. Carmel, wrapping up her career with a 260-20 record.
The annual awards dinner is scheduled for Oct. 18 at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido.
The rest of the Hall of Fame coaching class includes the late Ed Johnson, who coached baseball for 29 years, starting at Marian, which is now Mater Dei Catholic.
He is joined by Tod Mattox, who spent 39 years coaching girls volleyball, primarily at Bishop’s; Scott Sanders, who spent 25 years coaching cross country at La Jolla Country Day; and Nabil Noujaim, who coached boys soccer for 11 years and girls soccer for eight seasons at Central Union.
In addition, there are three Bob Breitbard Meritorious Achievement Award winners.
They are Stan Bickley, who coached boys and girls basketball at Tri-City Christian in addition to being the school’s athletic director; Ron Lardizabal, a longtime coach and administrator who spent 19 years at Hoover and is now the athletic director at Mira Mesa; and Tim Lindley, a swimming and water polo coach in the Grossmont District who has served as an administrator at Mount Miguel, Monte Vista, El Capitan and Grossmont.
