A shooting suspect led police on a wild chase, opening fire on officers on the 710 Freeway in Long Beach before eventually crashing in downtown Los Angeles.
It all unfolded around 12:24 a.m. Tuesday when officers responded to a shooting on Aquarium Way. Two men were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and another was treated at the scene. They are all expected to be OK.
Police tracked down the suspect vehicle near Burnett Street and Pacific Avenue, and a chase ensued.
That suspect headed north on the 710 Freeway and fired shots at officers, prompting them to fire back. Despite all the gunfire, nobody was hit.
That investigation shut down all northbound lanes of the freeway at Long Beach Boulevard, along with the 91 Freeway connectors, well into the morning. The full closure remained in effect until around 9 a.m.
The chase ended when the suspect crashed into a power pole and fire hydrant near Santa Fe Avenue and 11th Street in downtown L.A., knocking out power and sending water rushing onto streets in the area.
The suspect was pulled from the wreckage, taken into custody and then to the hospital with injuries from the crash.
Police say a firearm was recovered.
Meanwhile, the motive for the initial shooting in Long Beach remains under investigation.
