In a reversal, Intel will take the real estate of its 162-acre campus in Folsom off the market, the company confirmed Wednesday.

The company had planned to sell the Prairie City Road property and lease back a portion of expansive campus along Highway 50. In a statement, Intel said leaders had determined that retaining ownership “supports our long-term objectives.”

The reversal, first reported by the Sacramento Business Journal, was a strategic reassessment, not a reflection of the quality of the proposals it received, the statement said.

In the past, the campus had employed around 5,000 people. The company declined to say, Wednesday, how many workers are located there now. But the site had seen a series of downsizing moves over recent years, as the company struggled to keep up with its rivals as generative AI transformed the industry.

In 2024, Intel announced plans to cut costs by $10 billion, in part by trimming more than 15% of its global workforce. Later that year, the company said it would list the Folsom real estate for sale and lease back a portion of the space.

At the time, the company employed around 100,000 people worldwide, according to regulatory filings. As of June, it employed less than 78,000.
