Coastal communities could see impacts from tropical storm Marie as early as friday, according to NBC4’s First Alert weather team.
In Long Beach, crews were seen working to build a berm, just one of the measures being taking to protect homes and businesses along the coast.
“The marine safety bureau, at the end, has sand and sandbags ready for the residents. most of it is just prep,” Rob Covell, a Long Beach resident, said.
Preparations are being made to protect communities from the possible impacts of tropical storm Marie this weekend.
“Even with the boards, the waves slam right over it,” Siobhan Gadallah, a Long Beach resident, said.
Those who live on the Long Beach peninsula are prone to coastal flooding and have been dealing with it quite a bit this summer.
“In the last 3 months i would say about 15, 17 days in a month,” Vr Venkataraman, a Long Beach resident, said.
NBC4’s First Alert weather team says tropical storm Marie may cause those same conditions like large breaking waves, high tides, coastal flooding and dangerous rip currents.
“You have to be understanding of your limitations. a lot of people are more confident than their ability in the waters,” Adam Yacenda, a lifeguard battalion chief with the Newport Beach Fire Department, said.
Yacenda says he’s expecting large crowds at beaches up and down the coast for the Labor Day weekend and is warning people to take precautions.
“It’s very important you talk to a lifeguard, and they can give you tips and pointers and ensure you have a safe time in the water,” Yacenda said.
