A big tent in the English countryside, a timer ticking as contestants vigorously craft cakes to be evaluated. It’s not the “Great British Bake Off,” but the inaugural Capital Cake Swap might be as close as Sacramento will get.
On Sunday, Sept. 27, at Drake’s Barn in West Sacramento, the Capital Cake Swap will be hosted by the Sacramento chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier, a global professional and philanthropic society for leaders in the food, beverage, and hospitality industries.
The event provides an opportunity for 250 cake lovers to bring a cake (homemade or store bought) to share. Participants can admire the cakes on display and fill a take-home box with some their favorite sliced selections.
Cake swaps have gone viral over the past several years on social media, with cake lovers around the world gathering at large picnic to share slices.
Les Dames d’Escoffier International is dedicated to supporting the next generation through scholarships, grants, mentoring and community engagement. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to the organization’s Sacramento chapter in support of its mission to advance women in the culinary arts.
“Capital Cake Swap is more than just an afternoon of cake — it’s an opportunity to bring our community together to celebrate baking, creativity and the people who make Sacramento’s food scene so special,” said Jami Babcock, a member of Les Dames d’Escoffier Sacramento and lead organizer of the event. “Whether someone bakes an elaborate showpiece or picks up a favorite cake from a local bakery, everyone will leave with a wonderful assortment of cake while helping support the next generation of women in food, beverage, agriculture, and hospitality.”
Tickets are $30 per person, with attendance limited to 250 people. Tickets can be purchased on the swap website.
