Habitat for Humanity of Ottawa County officially broke ground on Oakland Acres, its newest housing development in Port Clinton, during a ceremony on Aug. 12.
It marks the beginning of a major new chapter for Habitat for Humanity of Ottawa County. Once complete, Oakland Acres is expected to include approximately 15 to 17 affordable homes, creating new opportunities for local families to achieve affordable homeownership and put down roots in the Port Clinton community.
“This development represents years of planning and a major investment in the future of affordable housing in Ottawa County,” Debi Heiks, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Ottawa County, said. “We are excited to begin turning this property into a neighborhood and to continue creating opportunities for families to build strength, stability and independence through homeownership.”
The Oakland Acres project has been made possible through the support and collaboration of many organizations and individuals. Habitat for Humanity of Ottawa County extends its sincere appreciation to the Ohio Department of Development, as well as the partners, contractors, sponsors, donors and volunteers who have contributed their time, expertise and resources to help move the development forward.
“For me, one of the best parts of the groundbreaking was seeing so many of the people who have supported this project gathered together in one place,” Valerie Winterfield, Community Engagement Director for Habitat for Humanity of Ottawa County, said. “A development like Oakland Acres truly takes a community. From our partners and contractors to our sponsors, donors and volunteers, so many people have played a part in getting us to this point. We are incredibly grateful, and we can’t wait to watch Oakland Acres grow into a neighborhood where 15 to 17 families will have a place to call home.”
Oakland Acres will be developed in phases over the coming years. Habitat for Humanity of Ottawa County will work alongside homeowners, volunteers, contractors and community partners as construction progresses throughout the development.
Affordable housing remains a significant need in Ottawa County, and Habitat is passionate about being part of the solution. Through affordable homeownership, Habitat families have the opportunity to purchase a safe, decent home with an affordable mortgage while building long-term stability for themselves and their families.
The groundbreaking celebrated not only the beginning of construction at Oakland Acres, but also the partnerships that continue to make Habitat’s work possible throughout Ottawa County.
“We know there is a tremendous need for affordable housing in our community, and Oakland Acres gives us the opportunity to make a meaningful impact for years to come,” Heiks said. “We are proud of what this development will mean for Port Clinton and especially for the families who will someday call it home.”
