A 35-yard pass from Christian English to Ray Brown set up a quarterback sneak for a touchdown, giving Fresno City College a 22-18 victory over Sierra College in the season opener in Rocklin on Aug. 29.
Brown finished with 3 receptions for 65 yards.
Fresno City hosts Foothill at 5 p.m. Saturday in a nonconference game.
In this week’s Q&A, The Bee caught up with the former Edison High standout.
Question: You guys had a slow start against Sierra. What do you need to do this week to avoid another slow start?
Ray Brown: Come out playing harder from the start. I felt like we played a little weak coming out. Got punched in the mouth early, and then tried playing catch-up at the end. And luckily, we came out with the win.
Q: You were wide open and English saw you. What is it about you two?
RB: Just a lot of trust. I know he trusts me to go get it, and I trust him to get the ball there. So it’s just a lot of trust.
Q: What do you want to do for yourself this year? I mean, as far as your goals and stuff. We’re already one game into the season, but what are your expectations for yourself the rest of the way?
RB: Make it out of JUCO, pretty much. Make it to the next level.
Q: Are you hearing any buzz about that, as far as recruitment?
RB: It’s really just been in the middle. Just a slow grind, I would say. Just keep being humble. It’s gonna come.
Q: Obviously, you’re one of the leaders in the receiver room — how can you motivate these guys to get going?
RB: I would say just show up every day and work hard so they can follow behind and do the same thing.
Q: What does your work ethic do for everybody else?
RB: I will set the tone for everybody else.
Q: Towards the end of the game against Sierra, did you feel a different type of energy?
RB: Yeah, I definitely felt the energy from everybody, from the coaches to the players.
