A man is behind bars after Sacramento police connected him to five business burglaries in downtown and Midtown Sacramento.

Police say 46-year-old Darrell Buckner could be responsible for additional burglaries as investigators continue reviewing evidence from a string of break-ins.

Police say officers working the case found a man matching Buckner’s description early Friday morning. He was arrested just after 3 a.m. near Ninth and K streets with burglary tools and illegal drugs, according to police.

The investigation began after nine businesses in the downtown and Midtown areas were burglarized between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Surveillance video from Joneck’s Wine Lounge and Bottle Shop in Midtown shows a hooded man bursting through the glass door early Wednesday morning.

Owner Renee Joneck was woken up by an alert on her phone and watched as the stranger ran behind her bar.

“It’s terrifying, because I don’t know what they’re doing, what they’re grabbing, or how long they’re going to be in there,” Joneck said.

The intruder took some speakers and a bag of camera equipment Joneck uses for social media. But she said the impact of the burglary goes beyond what was stolen.

“Somebody’s in my space. It’s like my baby. This is my home,” Joneck said.

Sacramento police now believe the person seen in the surveillance video is Buckner. Investigators have connected him to five of the nine burglaries, but they say he could be responsible for others.

“These investigations can be pretty tedious as we comb through video, we look at physical evidence that we have on scene. As we put this together, he may be responsible for the other ones,” Sacramento police Sgt. Anthony Gamble said.

The East Village Bookshop on McKinley and Locked Barrel Whiskey Bar on 11th were also burglarized during the crime spree. Managers at both businesses told ABC10 they were thrilled to hear an arrest had been made.

Joneck said she has reached out to other impacted businesses to let them know she is there for them.

“We’re all in this together. We should be looking out for each other and making sure everybody’s safe and we support each other,” Joneck said.

Police said Buckner has an extensive criminal background and that officers are familiar with him. Court records show Buckner has been involved in multiple criminal proceedings dating back to 2018.

Buckner is being held at Sacramento County Jail on burglary and drug charges. He has no bond.
