(FOX40.COM) — Sacramento police arrested 46-year-old Darrell Buckner in connection to five out of nine recent burglaries targeting businesses in midtown and downtown Sacramento.
“These are real people with real businesses, with real livelihoods that they’re trying to provide for,” Anthony Gamble with the Sacramento Police Department said Friday afternoon.
Police said they found the suspect near 9th and K Streets around 3 a.m. Friday, just days after the string of burglaries.
“Approximately nine burglaries occurred from September 1st through September 2nd,” Gamble said.
Gamble described the suspect’s criminal past.
“Mr. Buckner has an extensive criminal history in Sacramento,” Gamble said. “Officers that have worked in the downtown area have had multiple run-ins with him. He’s not foreign to police contact.”
However, the arrest did not mark the end of the investigation. Detectives are still compiling evidence and looking into the other burglaries that occurred within the same narrow window of time.
While accountability could be on the horizon, FOX40 went to several of the nine crime scenes on Friday and saw broken glass and boarded windows still serving as a reminder of what happened and the impact on these small businesses.
FOX40 met Emily Parrott, who has worked at East Village Bookshop for about a month.
“We like to support other local authors and we have a book club,” Parrott said when asked about the business. “We do some children’s book story times.”
Along with Joneck’s Wine Lounge and the whisky bar Locked Barrel, the bookshop was one of the nine businesses hit.
“At first I didn’t realize it really was true and it was us,” Parrott recalled. “It was true. It was so sad.”
She said that during times like this, she is grateful for the supportive community.
“It builds mutual respect, trust, community,” Parrott said after telling FOX40 that it was fellow community members who reported the crime. “It’s super important that we all are looking out for each other and we can feel safe.”
While police couldn’t share details on what exactly Buckner was found with, officials confirm he had burglary tools on him when he was arrested, as well as narcotics.
