(FOX40.COM) — A massive wave of visitors is expected at Sacramento County’s rivers on Labor Day, so park rangers gave vital tips to avoid injuries and citations.
FOX40 reporter Canyon Mizera joined George Tsikis, a Sacramento County Regional Parks ranger, for a safety watch at the San Juan Rapids along the American River on Saturday. Tsikis gave helpful tips for staying safe while protecting those on the river.

“My recommendation is for everybody to wear a life jacket,” Tsikis advised people who plan to take a trip to the rapids.
“I don’t care if you’re under 13 or over 13, you need a life jacket when you’re going down these rapids,” Tsikis said. He also explained that many Sacramento County parks have free life vests available to use.
Excess alcohol consumption is another hidden danger that people brush off until it’s too late.
According to Tsikis, all consumption is prohibited afloat and on shore from Sept. 5 through Sept. 7 to keep visitors safe across the entire American River. He noted that people “end up drinking a lot” while also staying out with no food or water for multiple hours, creating a dangerous health situation.
So those heading to the water during Labor Day weekend are welcome to bring kayaks and paddleboards, but should leave the booze behind.
