FLORENCE — Two roadways are expected to have temporary lane closures and require detours as stormwater improvements take place.
The city received grant funding from the South Carolina Office of Resilience for the North Church Street and Oakland Avenue stormwater enhancement project.
The project is designed to address localized flooding that can occur in the area during period of heavy rainfall.
The project will improve the existing stormwater system along the Oakland Avenue and Norfolk Street corridors, according to a news release.
Construction is expected to begin in September with completion expected in early summer 2027, the release said.
The project will consist of the installation of larger stormwater pipes, new catch basins and other drainage improvements.
The construction project area includes Oakland Avenue from Layton Street to Norfolk Street, and Norfolk Street from Oakland Avenue to Brand Street.
Construction will take place within the roadways and is expected to require temporary lane closures, traffic detours and other construction-related impacts.
Residents and motorists traveling through the project area are encouraged to use caution around construction activities, the release said.
The city has recently been taking strides to improve its water, sewer and stormwater systems. It adopted masterplans for strengthening its aging infrastructure in September of last year and is using millions of dollars in bond money for improvements.
