LAGUNA HILLS, Calif. — It’s been 25 years since the Sept. 11 attacks.
On Sept. 11, 2001, as the country and world watched in horror, a woman in Orange County packed her bags and headed to New York shortly after the attacks.
Shala Tavakoli explained that as an immigrant from Iran, who came to the U.S. in 1974, she felt stepping up would be her one chance to give back to the U.S.
Years later, Tavakoli developed cancer, and doctors believe it has a connection to her exposure at Ground Zero. But she said she has no regrets helping in the cleanup and recovery efforts 25 years ago.
