OU launches first-of-its-kind study into beaver coexistence

OAKLAND COUNTY – Oakland University researchers launched a first-of-its-kind stream study last month into how Michigan manages flooding associated with beaver activity.

Collaborating with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), OU researchers installed a pond leveler in Galloway Creek last month, where beavers have created a pond along Oakland University’s Alice R. Champion Trail.

Researchers involved in the program joined Local 4 on Friday, Sept. 4, to share more about the study and how it could help shape how Michigan manages flooding associated with beaver activity — without removing the animals or the habitat they create.
