If lighthouses conjure up images of pirates and seafaring adventures, the story of Los Angeles’ first lighthouse is a bit tamer.
Now home to the busiest port in the country, San Pedro Bay was a dangerous area for ships 150 years ago. A Victorian-style lighthouse was built on Point Fermin, guiding ships along the California coast for decades, until its light was finally extinguished for good.
But the lighthouse still exists and is open for visits by modern-day explorers.
